ASAP Tutor Mentor

The Academic Success & Achievement Program (ASAP) is looking for tutor mentors to join our team for the 2024-2025 academic school year. ASAP provides free small group tutoring and one-on-one tutoring to all first-year students and any student living on campus, including new transfer students and Bear Creek residents. See more information about our program on the ASAP website. The tutor mentor position is a great opportunity for those who want more experience in teaching, mentoring and learning course content in a deeper way. We hire undergraduate students who are sophomores, juniors and seniors.

Successful candidates will attend virtual training and orientation August 14-16, along with bi-weekly in-person trainings on Wednesdays from 5-6 p.m. in C4C S350.

Pay, hours and benefits: 

  • Flexible work schedule 
  • $17.00/hour starting wage with opportunities for pay increases after two semesters 
  • Accrue sick leave at a rate of 0.034 hours for every hour worked
  • Earn a training certification from the College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA) Level 1 

 

Tutoring responsibilities: 

  • Provide in-person and virtual tutoring for small group and one-on-one sessions  
  • Help students improve their knowledge of course material
  • Help students develop more effective study skills 
  • Help students foster independent learning 
  • Provide a comfortable and supportive learning environment 
  • Maintain consistent communication with ASAP staff including the program manager and the head tutor mentors 
  • Maintain consistent communication with students through the scheduling platform, Penji 
  • Notify ASAP staff if any questions or issues arise with tutoring groups and students

 

Training and additional responsibilities:  

  • Attend the virtual tutor mentor training and orientation August 14-16
  • Attend all ASAP trainings on a bi-weekly basis 
  • Attend end of semester evaluations 1x a semester 
  • In conjunction with your head tutor mentor participate in tutor mentor observations 
  • Contribute in a positive way to the ASAP community  
  • Complete online trainings as time allows 
  • Occasionally provide support to ASAP for promotional events, drop-in tutoring or additional academic support events as they occur
  • Adhere to the University Honor Code 
  • Take part in opportunities to give/receive feedback via evaluations, assessments and surveys 

 

Minimum qualifications: 

  • A minimum cumulative 3.0+ GPA and 3.2+ GPA in tutoring courses
  • Full time CU Boulder student, who is at least a sophomore (minimum of 12 credits)
  • Passionate about course content with a desire to share with other students   
  • Express excitement about making a difference in students’ lives 
  • Interest in being a mentor, especially to first-year students 
  • Desire to teach/share study skills for students’ own success  
  • Work with limited supervision 
  • University student conduct record will be reviewed and background checks are required 

 

Preferred qualifications: 

  • Willing and able to tutor for at least two semesters 
  • Prior experience leading or mentoring peers 
  • Strong customer service skills and the ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds 

 

Hours: 

  • Work hours scheduled between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. Sunday through Saturday (availability set by tutor mentor) 
  • Required to have a minimum of five hours/week of availability  
  • Attend paid in-person bi-weekly tutor mentor trainings on Wednesdays from 5-6 p.m.
  • Not required to work during university holidays or during finals week
